'THE LATE' LEON VAN DEN EIJKEL
Leon van den Eijkel (15 October 1940 – 15 April 2021) was a Dutch-born New Zealand artist who studied at The Hague’s Royal Academy of Art and emigrated to New Zealand in 1986.
Van den Eijkel exhibited widely in Europe, the United States, and New Zealand, and is represented in many major public and private collections.
In 2019 Van den Eijkel engaged Global Stainless to fabricate several spherical works including his ‘Round and Round’ sculpture that was exhibited at the Waiheke Island ‘Sculpture on the gulf’
The sculpture includes five one-meter diameter stainless steel spheres, finished with high quality metallic automotive paint.
“Round and Round celebrates the uniqueness of human technology. Through the Pacific colour palette of the orbs, we celebrate the way the sculpture perfectly balances the thin line between urbanization and nature in this place.”
